CHAPTER 5 Jesus at the Lake of Gennesaret

1 And it came to pass in the time the multitude pressed upon him to hear the word of God, and he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats standing by the lake; and the fishermen having disembarked from them were washing the nets. 3 And having stepped into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him [³from ⁴the ⁵land ¹to turn back ²a little]. And having sat down he taught [³from out of ⁴the ⁵boat ¹the ²multitudes].

The Miracle of the Catch

4 And as he ceased speaking, he said to Simon, Turn back into the depth, and let down your nets for a catch! 5 And responding Simon said to him, Master, through the entire night having tired [²nothing ¹we took], but on your word I will let down the net. 6 And this having done, they closed up a multitude [²fishes ¹of great]; [³was being torn ¹and ²their net]. 7 And they nodded to their partners, to the ones in the other boat, to come seize them; and they came and filled both the boats, so that they were submerged. 8 And beholding, Simon Peter fell at the knees of Jesus, saying, Go forth from me, for [²a man ³a sinner ¹I am], O Lord. 9 For a stupefaction compassed him, and all the ones with him, over the catch of the fishes which they seized; 10 and likewise also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, the ones who were partners with Simon. And [²said ³to ⁴Simon ¹Jesus], Fear not! from now on [³men ¹you will be ²taking alive]! 11 And leading the boats unto the land, leaving all, they followed him.

Jesus Heals the Leper

12 And it came to pass in his being in one of the cities, and behold -- a man full of leprosy. And seeing Jesus, falling upon his face, he beseeched him, saying, O Lord, if you should want, you are able to cleanse me. 13 And having stretched out the hand, he touched him, saying, I want, be cleansed! And immediately the leprosy went forth from him. 14 And he exhorted him [²no one ¹to tell]; but said, Having gone forth show yourself to the priest, and offer concerning your cleansing as Moses assigned for a testimony to them! 15 [⁴went through ¹And ⁵more ²the ³word] concerning him. And [³gathered together ²multitudes ¹many] to hear, and to be cured by him of their sicknesses. 16 And he was retreating in the wildernesses, and praying. 17 And it came to pass on one of the days, and he was teaching, and there were sitting down Pharisees and teachers of the law, the ones who were coming from out of every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem. And power of the Lord was there for them to be healed. 18 And behold, men were bringing upon a bed a man who was disabled, and they sought to carry him in, and to put him in front of him. 19 And not having found by what means they should carry him in through the multitude, having ascending upon the roof, [³through ⁴the ⁵ceramic tiles ¹they lowered ²him] with the cot into the midst before Jesus.

Jesus Forgives Sins

20 And beholding their belief, he said to him, O man, [²are forgiven ³you ¹your sins]. 21 And [⁶began ⁷to reason ¹the ²scribes ³and ⁴the ⁵Pharisees], saying, Who is this who speaks blasphemy? Who is able to forgive sins, except God alone? 22 [³recognizing ¹And ²Jesus] their thoughts, responding said to them, Why do you reason in your hearts? 23 What is easier to say? [²are forgiven ³to you ¹Your sins]; or to say, Arise and walk! 24 But that you should know that [⁵authority ⁴has ¹the ²son ³of man] upon the earth to forgive sins, he said to the disabled man, To you I say, Arise, and take your cot, go unto your house! 25 And immediately, having risen before them, and having lifted that upon which he reclined, he went forth unto his house glorifying God. 26 And astonishment took all, and they glorified God, and were filled of fear, saying that, We beheld an incredible thing today.

Levi the Tax Collector

27 And after these things he went forth, and he saw a tax collector, by name Levi, sitting down at the tax collector's station. And he said to him, Follow me! 28 And leaving behind all, having risen, he followed him. 29 And [²made ⁴banquet ³a great ¹Levi] for him in his house. And was there [²multitude ³of tax collectors ¹a great], and others who were with them reclining. 30 And [⁵grumbled ¹their scribes ²and ³the ⁴Pharisees] against his disciples, saying, Why with the tax collectors and sinners does he eat and drink? 31 And answering Jesus said to them, No need [³have ¹do the ones ²being in health] of a physician, but the ones [²illnesses ¹having]. 32 I have not come to call righteous ones but sinners unto repentance.

Jesus Questioned About Fasting

33 And they said to him, Why do the disciples of John fast frequently, and [²supplications ¹make], and in like manner the ones of the Pharisees, but the ones to you eat and drink? 34 And he said to them, Are you able [²the ³sons ⁴of the ⁵bridal chamber ⁷when ⁸the ⁹groom ¹¹with ¹²them ¹⁰is ¹to make ⁶fast]? 35 But there will come days, that whenever [³departs ⁴from ⁵them ¹the ²groom], then they shall fast in those days. 36 And he spoke also a parable to them that, No one [²a piece of cloth ⁴coat ³of a new ¹puts] upon [²cloak ¹an old]; otherwise also the new splits, and the old cloak does not join in harmony with the one of the new. 37 And no one casts [²wine ¹new] into [²leather wine bags ¹old]; otherwise [⁴shall tear ¹the ²new ³wine] the leather wine bags, and it will be poured out, and the leather wine bags will be destroyed. 38 But [²wine ¹new ⁴into ⁶leather wine bags ⁵new ³is put], and both are preserved together. 39 And no one having drunk old wine immediately wants new; for he says the old is better.
